I was asked in the autumn of 2021 to paint an elephant on the external facade of the Elephant Gatehouse, which is part of the Castle Hotel in Bishops Castle. During WW2 several circuses from London evacuated their animals to Shropshire, and an elephant was kept in the Gatehouse. She walked the country lanes and fields with the stablehands and was an amazing sight for the people of the town. I was inspired by the face of the elephant in the beautiful stained-glass on the front doors to create my version, and I colour matched and mixed the striking blue of the existing doors and windows to create a new window for the elephant to lean out of. Elephants are seen throughout Bishops Castle and I’m so pleased I was asked to paint one on the original home of the elephant.
